about

I thought it was time to pick up the old electric six string again and do some guitar-based tracks. I’d being listening to loads of world music and stuff as well as Michael Rother’s solo output and as always Popol Vuh whose guitarist Daniel Fichelsher has been the biggest influence on my guitaring along with Michael Karoli (CAN), 13th Floor Elevators Stacy Sutherland and Manuel Gottsching. I wanted each track to have its own little universe – The BJM inspired sitar led ‘Ramen Roll’, The mutant Mali rock of ‘Invisible JuJu’, the Pastoral krautrock of ‘Jerusalem Road’ and the Anatolian raga of ‘Tamerlane’ all try to evoke exotic places in my mind, some that I have been to and some imaginary. The album hits a stride on side 2, especially with the Blakean dedications ‘Bones of the Golden Loom’ and ‘Urlo sings the Shadow’. Finally, ‘Night Closure’ finishes the album with just a sparse piano and silence. Kind of reminds me of those Gurdjieff albums on ECM.

Fred Laird (Artifacts & Uranium, Earthling Society, Sonic Shamen, Taras Bulba, Empty House) has been making weird lo-fi psychedelia since the early 90’s.

‘The Golden Hour’ is a return to Fred’s guitar roots, similar to late period Earthling Society. Plenty of Krautrock vibes (think Agitation Free, AD2, Neu!) Garage and Anatolian psych and a wee bit of ambience.

“’The Golden Hour’ stacks up alongside Empty House’s finest work so far.” - @sun13music
